A role playing game is a type of game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters and collaboratively create or follow stories. Within the rules, players can improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games. Role-playing games are a form of interactive and collaborative storytelling. Like novels or films, role-playing games appeal because they engage the imagination. Interactivity is the crucial difference between role-playing games and traditional fiction.
2. How exactly do you role play?
There are many ways to role play, however Number 12 has a specific way that we like to go about it. It is not outrageously challenging, but it can make you sometimes stop and think and reconsider, usually allowing your to expand your horizons and try something totally new. Role playing requires imagination, creativity, wit, and has actually been the reason for a handful of members receiving better grades after their hours of writing at Number 12!
First off, everything must be written in third person.
Next, you must consider all five senses in order to complete a decent post. Although you don't have to use all five senses in every single post, they're a great way to get you moving if you get stuck.Ex.) Mary Sue walked down the dark and musty corridor, her black scuffed Mary Janes tapping lightly on the cold stone floor as she went.
Ex.) Betty Sue walked down the dark and musty corridor, her black scuffed Mary Janes tapping lightly on the cold stone floor as she went. She absentmindedly passed closed doors and dirty windows on her way up to the Gryffindor common room. Her thoughts were much more focused on the Potions class she had just nearly survived. The heat from the fires that burned fiercely under the third years' cauldrons was enough to make anyone's stress level rise a few degrees. Betty Sue was sure Professor Snape was going to fail her out of his class after her Memory Potion accidentally spilt all over Jane Doe's lap.
3. Is there a wrong/right way to role play?
The only real way that you can mess up role playing is is you do one of the following:
1. If you do not follow Number 12's rules.
2. If you do not write in third person- past tense at all times.
3. If you copy someone elses' post in any way, shape, or form- even as an "inspiration" or starter.
4. If you don't put a little heart into what you write. It should always be something you're proud of, or at least something you wouldn't mind lots of other people reading (since they will be reading it).
OOC: Out of Character
You as the writer would use this if you wanted to say something completely outside of the role playing game. It is usually something like,Ex. "OOC: Haha! Great post! I could totally see what your character was doing!"
IC: In Character
You would use this after your OOC comment to let everyone know that you are going to be back into your role playing character again.
